On January 28, President George W. Bush signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2008 (NDAA), Public Law 110-181. Section 585(a) of the NDAA amended the FMLA to provide eligible employees two important new leave-rights related to military service:

(1) New Qualifying Reason for Leave. Eligible employees are entitled to up to 12 weeks of leave because of “any qualifying exigency” arising out of the fact that the spouse, son, daughter, or parent of the employee is on active duty, or has been notified of an impending call to active duty status, in support of a contingency operation.

(2) New Leave Entitlement. An eligible employee who is the spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin of a covered service member who is recovering from a serious illness or injury sustained in the line of duty on active duty is entitled to up to 26 weeks of leave in a single 12-month period to care for the service member.

Contact: Yrelys Tapanes, Benefits Manager, at ytapanes@kean.edu or at 7-3313.

Message from University Counsel: Scholarly Capacity Disclosure Form

The State Ethics Commission recently revised it regulations to permit academic personnel to receive “benefits” for activities they engage in and/or work they perform in their scholarly capacity. This includes honoraria, royalties, travel expenses, academic prizes, and/or other things of value. However, there is a requirement to disclose annually any benefits received from this scholarly activity. Please click here for a copy of the required disclosure form. Also, the time period covered by this disclosure form is from November 19, 2007 (the effective date of the new regulations), through the end of the 2007 calendar year, or December 31, 2007 (less than 2 months).

If you have any benefits to disclose, please complete this form and return it to me no later than April 30, 2008. Several fundamental themes and questions will be used to guide and encourage dialogue about learners and learning and approaches for effective pedagogy:

Content Literacy: How do we help students to acquire strong language and literacy skills across content areas?

Real Connections: How do we connect content to real-world challenges and the kinds of learning students need for life and work?

Interactive Learning: How do we utilize dialogue, collaboration, cooperative learning, and other interactive activities in our classes?

Higher-Level Thinking: How do we explore strategies and structures for college learning that promote higher-level intellectual and practical skills?

Participants will be given an opportunity to experience activities that promote teaching and learning through small group work, discipline-based literacy tasks, text to student connections, tasks based on problem-solving and complex understandings, and the use of dialogue as a tool for acquiring content knowledge.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: DR. His most recent book, Teaching English today: Advocating change in the English curriculum, was published in 2004 by Teachers College Press. In addition, in 2006 he published an article in Language Arts with Nancy Atwell titled, Frank Smith: Visions of the possibilities. In 1990 he won the Russell Award for Distinguished Research for his ground breaking text Uncommon Sense: Theoretical Practice in Language Education and in 1998 he won both the Distinguished Service Award from The National Council of Teachers of English and the Distinguished Teaching Medal from New York University.

Conference Schedule:

8:30-9:00 Registration and Continental Breakfast

9:00-9:15 Welcome

9:15-10:00 Keynote

10:00-10:30 Workshop Presenters’ Responses to Keynote

10:30-11:00 Audience Discussion

11:00-11:15 Break
11:15-1:00 Break Out Sessions

Writing Across the Curriculum

Possibility Based Learning

Case Studies

Technology in Education

Content Learning and Language Acquisition

Peer Led Team Learning

Software

1:00-200 Lunch - Summaries and Reflections
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:postalcode st="on">

</st1:postalcode>
<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

RSVP:

Please complete our online registration by April 2, 2008

http://www.kean.edu/~cpd/professionaldevelopment/conference.html

(If your browser displays an error message when clicking on the above link, please copy the following and paste it into a new window
http://www.kean.edu/~cpd/professionaldevelopment/conference.html )

Session descriptions:

Writing Across the Curriculum

Not Just the English Department's Job: Integrating Writing Across the Curriculum

The Writing Across the Curriculum movement has shown that writing is an extremely powerful means of helping students analyze, synthesize, and retain information. Many professors, however, worry they cannot effectively teach writing, especially in courses that require covering a lot of information. This hands-on session will respond to these concerns by offering strategies for integrating writing into any course, with an emphasis on the practical aspects of assigning, coaching, and evaluating student work. Handouts will be provided with examples of informal and formal writing assignments, as well as a bibliography of resources.

Facilitator: Dr. Mark Sutton,

English Department
College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Possibility Based Learning "Hands On, Minds Open!"

Current educational research emphasizes the need to impart content knowledge while also stimulating higher order forms of intellectual operation such as creative idea formation and the propensity to explore and discover in ways that do not always lead to predetermined solutions or "right" answers. The artistic process naturally embodies this global form of intellectual engagement by integrating sensory, emotional, kinesthetic, and cognitive ways of knowing. This workshop offers a brief introduction followed by a hands-on experience in which participants engage in art making using accessible materials as conduits to creative thinking and original idea formation. A follow-up dialogue will stimulate thought about pedagogical applications to writing, literacy, science, social studies and/or other subject areas. No previous artistic experience required. Dress comfortably.

Facilitator: Dr. Joseph S. These are provided in context of real-world applications to promote higher level thinking skills and to understand underlying concepts and system behaviors. Session includes self-guided and group inquiry, interactive sharing and discussion for collaborative and cooperative learning, and use of hand-held sensors. Methods, course structure, and logistics are highlighted that provide content, context, motivation, outcomes, and assessment of learning. Alternative techniques and applications are also considered.

Facilitator: Dr. Paul J. The components of inquiry-based instruction can be learned through the use of case studies. Case studies that link discipline-related concepts with relevant interdisciplinary issues demonstrate this teaching method when teaching current units in the inquiry-based classroom. Participants will practice inquiry¬ based skills with interdisciplinary case studies and receive current literature on the informal case study presentation method.(99 words)

Facilitator: Dr. Patrick R. Participants will be given a list of resourcesfor setting up wikis and weblogs and for using them in the classroom.

Co-Facilitators: Dr. Charles Nelson,

Assistant Professor, Department of English

College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Dr. Dina Rosen,

Assistant Professor, Department of Early Childhood

College of Education

Deciphering Cultures

Several key elements are necessary to foster deeper learning: motivation, learner activity, interaction with others and strong knowledge base. This session uses an experiential exercise to demonstrate how these objectives can be met in the international business context, and more specifically, in the area of cross cultural understanding. The exercise is used to facilitate discussion and multiple viewpoints and to engage participants in t activity. Since cooperative and interactive learning are central components of the learning process, it is expected that exercises such as this can serve as effective learning tools.

Facilitator: Dr. Gladys Torres-Baumgarten,

Assistant Professor, Management Department

College of Business and Public Administration

Peer Led Team Learning

Faculty will participate in a workshop describing and utilizing the Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) Model. PLTL provides a structure for faculty to work with student peer leaders, tutors and mentors to improve student achievement in targeted classes. The structure focuses on facilitating student learning in groups by using problems that provide multiple solutions. While the model has been most successful in science classes, we have conducted pilot studies in other areas. The pilot work is funded by the Espilon Corps grant.

Facilitator: Dr. John Dobosiewicz,

Department of Geology & Meteorology

Epsilon Corp

College of Natural, Applied, & Health Sciences

Students Answering Their Own Research Questions on Civic and Global Chemical Issues

POGIL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) classroom activities focused upon chemical principles, global issues and research skills provide an excellent foundation for developing in students the skills, confidence and comfort with scientific content to pursue independent literature projects on global and civic concerns. Being able to answer a chemical question of their own making transforms the students' perceptions of their own abilities and of the accessibility of science in their lives.
A discussion of course structure, an examination of the pedagogy in classroom activities, and a summary of results will demonstrate the potential for rigorous accomplishment in a totally interactive classroom. The methods used are applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines.

Facilitator: Dr. A. Attendance will be a component of the grade of any course if so stated in the syllabus. Students are responsible for informing the instructor in advance or in a timely manner of the reasons for their absence. Instructors in consultation with their department chairs are expected to respect university practices and policies regarding what counts as an excused absence. Typically excused absences include illness, bereavement, or religious observances. Serious tardiness may be dealt with at the discretion of the instructor.

Toner Cartridges (Disposal of)

It has come to the attention of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) that many people have questions regarding the disposal procedures of USED toner cartridges. In the past, many staff members had re-boxed the used cartridges, placed a return sticker on them provided by the manufacturer, and sent the cartridges back out for recycling.

However, many of the manufacturers no longer provide this service. Therefore, in order to remain an environmentally conscious facility, the University must now turn to outside recycling companies for assistance.

In order to address this issue, the following procedures are being implemented for the current handling of used toner cartridges:

Any large cartridges from large printers, copiers and fax machines must be returned in a box when used and sealed up for removal. Small inkjet-type cartridges can either be put in a box or simply placed in a collection bin at the drop-off locations. Drop-off locations will be set up on the first floor alongside the mail drop-off boxes in the following buildings: Townsend, Bruce, Science, Hennings, Hutchinson, Willis, Nancy Thompson Library, CAS, University Center, Maintenance, Campus School East, Campus School South, Child Study Institute, and Whiteman Hall outside the Residence Life office. Additional drop-off locations will be set up on an as-needed basis. Please bring all your toner cartridges to these locations where a marked blue bin will be placed. If you are in a building without a drop-off location, please bring your recycling to a nearby building or contact EHS to arrange for a pick up.

If you have any suggestions or questions, please feel free to contact EHS at 7-3316. Thank you for your attention and cooperation.

Print Center Guidelines

Print Center Guidelines

The Kean University Print Center is located in Hutchinson Hall on the 2nd Floor, and is available to all faculty and staff to meet any duplication needs.

To process a print request, you may visit http://printctr.kean.edu/ and submit your request online. Nothing can be posted on campus without their approval. And ask for the rules or guide regarding where publicity materials can be posted.

Then you make your copies for campus use.

I'd count the buildings on the map and decide which ones would be worth posting in, and this varies according to discipline. I'd make sure I put some up in the UC building, for the most part I see a lot of them around the elevators, I'd cover all the floors allowed as per the rules of Willis/Hutchinson/Hennings Hall/CAS, I'd definitely post in Vaughn-Eames. I'd put some up in Townsend and Bruce, but I don't think there are as many spots. Until you familiarize yourself with all of the buildings I'd print the map available at: http://www.kean.edu/campusmap.html.

If the department has printing funds, I'd make some color copies in the duplication service office on the second floor of Hutchinson, but be aware that it can be expensive. I'd place those in strategic areas where the interest would be higher. Black and whites would probably do for other buildings where there may be no or little traffic, such as the Technology Building.

You can also send copies for the residence halls to the Residence Life office <http://www.kean.edu/~reslife/> with a note asking that they post them. There are 6 residence halls, and if I remember correctly there is one bulletin board on the first floor of each, but they can best tell you what their process is.

University Relations sends out e-mail 'blasts' of information to the campus as requested. This is the perfect way to alert all staff/faculty/administrators and make sure he request that they also do the 'all students' list. BTW, the University Relations office is in Hutchinson on the second floor and their number is 7-NEWS.

Another good option is the Administrative Report that we all receive late Friday afternoons. This does go out to all, but be aware that they are strict about their deadlines. The deadline for the Administrative Report is Friday at noon for publication one week from the following Monday. Please e-mail your information to news@kean.edu.

I see on this list <http://www.kean.edu/resident_clubs.html#2> that there many clubs and you may want to reach out to them personally. For Information on Student Groups at Kean, contact Student Life at (908) 737-5170

And also ask about the 2 student publications and their deadlines. The Cougar's Byte office is located in the University Center, they send out their publication in electronic format to all students, grad and undergrad. I think a personal visit to them on your way to lunch may help expedite the process of including your announcements.

The printed student newspaper, The Tower is published with the support of the department of communications in the CAS building. I can't find a website for their department information because it's under construction, but you can call Dr. Chris Lynch for more info.

Another option is to drop by the University Center Administration office and ask to place the announcement on the monitors that you see in the UC lobby.

This also applies to CAS (the center, not the building) which has a monitor in the CAS lobby. Ask at the main desk and they can direct you to the person in charge of disseminating information.

The Center for Academic Success (department) also sends out a list to freshman seminar instructors to share with students who get extra credit in T2K classes to attend events and write short reports about them. The office information is available at the desk on the first floor of the CAS building.

Anti-discrimination and Anti-harassment Training

(Official campus notice)

Anti-discrimination and Anti-harassment Training

In accordance with the Kean University anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policy (State Policy) and institutional mission, the University is committed to providing a campus environment free from discrimination or harassment. Kean University's policy mandates that employees who have been "subjected to any form of prohibited discrimination/harassment, or who witness others being subjected to such discrimination/harassment" are encouraged to report these incidents promptly to a supervisor, manager, or to the Office of Affirmative Action Programs. In addition, department chairs and other supervisory and managerial employees "must immediately refer any and all allegations of discrimination/harassment" to the Office of Affirmative Action Programs.

The New Jersey State Policy Prohibiting Discrimination, Harassment or Hostile Environments in the Workplace requires that all employees receive training pursuant to this policy. In the event that an employee sustains a work-related injury during
normal business hours(Monday through Friday, 9a.m. to 5 p.m.), he or she
is required to notify an immediate supervisor and the Office of Human
Resources (Benefits) Office at 7-3300 no later than the end of the
workday on which the injury occurred.

2. An accident-report form (form RM-2) must be completed and submitted
to the Benefits Office. In order for employees to be considered for
workers compensation and SLI (Sick Leave Injury) benefits, New Jersey
state regulations require that a completed and signed accident report is
forwarded to the Benefits area of the Office of Human Resources within
48 hours from the time of injury. The form can be obtained from the
Benefits Office or on the Office of Human Resources webpage.

3. In the event that an injury occurs during off hours (i.e., night
shift, weekend shift), Campus Police must be contacted at 7-4800.
Employees must notify an immediate supervisor and the Benefits Office
(Office of Human Resources) and file an accident report form (form RM-2)
within 48 hours from the time of injury. The Benefits Office will make
arrangements for an evaluation at a Concentra Medical Center.

4. It is the policy of the University to refer employees who are injured
on the job to a Concentra Medical Center. An Employer's Authorization
for Examination or Treatment form is required from the Office of Human
Resources before treatment can be rendered.

5. In the event of a medical emergency or if medical treatment is
required after the operating hours of Concentra, Campus Police will
arrange for transportation to the Union Hospital Emergency Room.

6. The State of New Jersey has selected Horizon Casualty Services to
provide a managed-care program to administer the University's Workers'
Compensation claims. An injured employee must follow the above reporting
procedures and seek treatment in accordance with this managed-care
program. Employees who do not comply with these procedures will be
responsible for any unauthorized medical bills. Employees should not
seek treatment from their primary-care physician.

7. Workers Compensation is applicable only when the injury is a direct
result of an employee's duties, the incident has been properly reported
and individual negligence is not involved. Medical documentation from a
University-appointed network physician must be provided for all work
days lost in order to be eligible for SLI benefits. In the event that
medical documentation is not submitted, benefits will be denied. Denials
may be appealed to the Merit System Board. Benefits are limited to one
year following the date of the incident.

8. In cases where there is reason to believe that on-the-job sick leave
is being abused, the University or its designee may investigate. If the
University concludes that there has been an abuse, disciplinary action,
up to and including termination, will be taken. In addition, where
appropriate, the matter will be referred to the State of New Jersey
Attorney General's Office for legal action.

Recycling Program

KEAN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS-WIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM - December 2006
Kean University is committed to providing a safe and healthful environment for all members of the campus community. Presently, the University is in the process of updating its recycling program to a campus-wide level effective January 2007. This is in response to a recent notification received by the University regarding mandatory compliance with the state’s recycling regulations for New Jersey higher education institutions.

Since then, the University has formed a special Recycling Committee to oversee and facilitate the implementation of this project. The committee members consist of a cross section of faculty and staff representing various administrative and academic departments including Environmental, Health and Safety, Facilities, Maintenance, Residence Life, Financial Services, and Biological Sciences. Student representatives have also been assigned to serve on the committee as well.

This introductory notice is the first in an ongoing series of informative e-mails regarding the recycling initiative at Kean University. Our initial focus will be on regular, everyday recyclable consumer items: aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, office paper and cardboard. Recycling will be required in all administrative and academic buildings, residence halls, and food-service locations. As the implementation process unfolds, the Recycling Committee will provide additional information as to how to properly comply with the new recycling policy.

The Recycling Committee is asking the campus community to provide whatever assistance is necessary in the upcoming weeks as we approach the official launch date. Full participation by all faculty, staff, students, and on-site vendors is essential for compliance purposes. Our goal is to set the benchmark for being one of the leaders among the New Jersey state colleges and universities for campus-wide recycling. It is imperative that we have your help and input in order to ensure the overall success of this endeavor.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support. If you have any questions, please contact the following individuals.

Sheryl Quatermas
Environmental, Health & Safety Officer
7-3316 or squaterm@kean.edu

John Maso
Director of Facilities Maintenance
7-5018 or jmaso@kean.edu

Kean University Recycling Program – Status Report – February 2007

Phase 1 has been completed.

Paper recycling bins have been placed in all offices throughout campus.
A three-bin grouping for bottles and cans, paper and general trash, have been placed throughout the hallways all over campus.
Large bottle and can bins have been placed throughout campus grounds and parking areas.
If your office has been missed due to the inability of the maintenance staff to place the bin, please send an e-mail to the program coordinator at squaterm@kean.edu with the building name, room number and your name, as well as times when the office is open.

Phase 2 is under way.

This portion of the program is focused on the residence halls and is due to be completed by the end of February.

Bins for the separation of bottles and cans as well as paper will be placed in trash areas or other designated rooms on each floor of each residence hall.
Students are required to provide their own receptacles in their rooms to separate trash from recyclables.
Training for the Office of Residence Life and administrators and staff has been completed.
The recycling program is an ongoing process that will continue to occur on campus. (What this does is automatically forward the message elsewhere without leaving a copy in Cougar and thus clogging up your allocated space.)
-Now as a precaution, I'd add the e-mail you are forwarding in the bottom box labeled 'Forward a copy of each message to:
(INSERT checkmark here) Enable forwarding

And ENTER the forwarding address in the box provided, remember to 'Enter one email address per line.'

Make sure you hit 'SAVE' and run a test from an outside source. A problem is created if I had included my middle initial and you didn't know what it was. Just typing in 'maria perez' would not have given you the correct entry for 'maria c perez', thus for some it's easier to do last name only if not sure and scroll. If your last name is 'delloiacono', as is Rob's few entries will appear.
-note that if assigned correctly (or as is the norm) all faculty/staff is listed as first initial-last name, but only up to 8 letters long. And of course, that rule is made to be broken when too many with the same name combinations begin to be placed into the system.
-students usually are the opposite of ours, they are last name then first letter of first name

it follows that if you do find me (for example), then you place a check mark in front of my name (and did you know that bcc means 'blind copy', that name will not show up on the e-mail received by others, only shows on your 'sent', I use it when sending messages to a large group of individuals). if you only meant to e-mail me, then hit 'ok', if you want to do multiple searched, then hit 'apply' and go back to the search window (that seems to hide under the other one! I tend to separate them either to the left or right to do multiples) and do your other searches. Once you have everyone, then click 'ok'

Another option if not sure, is to go to the online phone directory (http://web4.kean.edu/keandir/) and search either by last name, first name or department. Once you find 'maria perez' note that under the 'options' column on the right some of us have envelope icons, if you mouse over the icon see that my e-mail account address appears on your window, bottom left hand corner. I think if you hit the envelope icon, it will trigger Outlook to open and if you have not set it up, it can be a 'pain'. But, this way you are sure you have the right 'maria perez', since you can see the department designation. And of course, this works once they update that directory ;)

Happy searching, Maria
